Alan Shaw named NS executive vice president and chief marketing officer

Received the following via email.

Alan Shaw named Norfolk Southern executive vice president and chief marketing officer

NORFOLK, Va., May 14, 2015 – Alan H. Shaw has been named executive vice president and chief marketing officer by the board of directors of Norfolk Southern Corp. (NYSE: NSC), Chairman and CEO Wick Moorman said today.

The appointment is effective May 16, 2015, with an office in Norfolk, and Shaw will report to NS President James A. Squires. He succeeds Donald W. Seale, who retired after 39 years in management positions in NS’ marketing division.

“Norfolk Southern’s ongoing goal is to provide reliable rail services and market access that support our shippers and receivers as leaders in their business sectors,” Moorman said. “Alan has the experience and market perspective to ensure that our valued customer partnerships grow even stronger.”

“I have the highest confidence in Alan and the entire Marketing Division to continue finding effective ways for customers to take advantage of the best that rail has to offer,” said Squires. “Clean, safe, dependable rail transportation is what moves the economy, and Alan has the long-term perspective to build on those advantages.”

Reporting to Shaw will be NS’ merchandise, intermodal, and coal marketing organizations; the teams that manage shipping options such as short line connections and the transload network; real estate services; and the corporation’s industrial development services for companies that want to locate and expand rail-served businesses.

Shaw joined NS in 1994 and has held positions in the finance and marketing departments. He served as group vice president coal marketing and group vice president chemicals before being named vice president intermodal operations, his current position, in 2013. He holds degrees from Virginia Tech and is a graduate of the General Management Program at Harvard Business School.

CSX CFO Reviews Volume and Earnings Expectations for 2015

Received the following via email.

CSX CFO Reviews Volume and Earnings Expectations for 2015

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - May 14, 2015 - CSX (NYSE: CSX) Chief Financial Officer Fredrik Eliasson today discussed the company's performance and second quarter volume and earnings projections at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2015 Transportation Conference in Boston.

Eliasson highlighted the financial performance over the past decade, during which CSX delivered a compound annual growth rate in earnings per share of 20 percent, despite the loss of nearly $900 million in coal revenue over the last few years.

"We have delivered strong shareholder value by remaining focused on our three key value levers: pricing above inflation, driving ever more efficient operations, and growing our merchandise and intermodal businesses faster than the economy," Eliasson said. "CSX is emerging from the energy transition a stronger company with a more diversified business mix, which has been evident over the last three quarters in which we have delivered double-digit earnings growth and significant margin expansion."

Eliasson outlined the company's view of second quarter volume, which is tracking slightly below expected levels due to very strong comparisons to last year. However, thanks to improving service levels and asset utilization, the company still expects second quarter EPS growth that is flat to slightly up compared to last year.

For the full year, CSX continues to expect EPS growth in the mid-to-high single digit range, as well as meaningful margin expansion as the company makes progress toward a mid-60s operating ratio. Earnings growth this year will be driven predominantly by accelerating pricing performance and productivity gains approaching $200 million as the company cycles strong volume comparisons and additional headwinds coal.

The foundation of CSX's strategy is delivering excellent service to customers.  To that end, the company is making key resource investments to enhance service to the levels it produced prior to last year, and position the CSX to take advantage of the long-term growth opportunities present across nearly all of the markets it serves.

NS CEO tells shareholders he’s confident of long-term strengths and success

Received the following via email.

Norfolk Southern CEO tells shareholders he’s confident of long-term strengths and success

WILLIAMSBURG, Va., May 14, 2015 -- Addressing his last annual meeting as Norfolk Southern’s CEO, Wick Moorman told shareholders that “we see continuing strength in the overall economy as well as opportunities in many of the markets we serve,” and, “We are confident in our company’s long-term strengths and prospects for continued success.”

President Jim Squires becomes CEO June 1, and Moorman will remain as executive chairman of the board. Moorman reviewed company highlights of 2014, which included earning record income, revenues, and earnings per share while establishing its best-ever operating ratio, a key indicator of operating performance. These accomplishments were especially significant, Moorman said, considering 2014’s extreme winter weather and traffic surges that exceeded expectations, which created service challenges.

He delivered an upbeat message to customers and stockholders. “We expect to reach the strong velocity and service levels we saw in 2012 and 2013 by the second half of this year,” Moorman said. “As we restore our network’s velocity and efficiency, we will be able to secure additional business at rates that will drive positive returns for our shareholders.”

In official business, stockholders re-elected 13 directors for terms expiring in 2016: Thomas D. Bell Jr., chairman of Mesa Capital Partners; Erskine B. Bowles, senior advisor and vice chairman of BDT Capital Partners LLC; Robert A. Bradway, chairman and chief executive officer of Amgen Inc.; Wesley G. Bush, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Northrop Grumman Corporation; Daniel A. Carp, chairman of Delta Air Lines Inc.; Karen N. Horn, a partner with Brock Capital Group; Steven F. Leer, senior adviser to Arch Coal Inc.; Michael D. Lockhart, retired chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Armstrong World Industries Inc.; Amy E. Miles, chief executive officer of Regal Entertainment Group; Moorman; Martin H. Nesbitt, co-founder of The Vistria Group; Squires; and John R. Thompson, government relations consultant for Best Buy Co. Inc.

Stockholders ratified appointment of KPMG LLP as auditors and approved an advisory resolution on the compensation of executive officers, an executive management incentive plan and a long-term incentive plan.

Moorman's remarks and a new video are posted in the Investor Relations section of the Norfolk Southern website.

CSX and Partners Give Back “Beyond Our Rails” in Philadelphia

CSX and Partners Give Back “Beyond Our Rails” in Philadelphia

Philadelphia, Pa. – May 12, 2015 – More than 180 volunteers from CSX, its national service partners Action for Healthy Kids, City Year and Alliance for Community Trees, and community and school representatives gathered in Philadelphia on Saturday to improve a school facility and the local environment.

Throughout the morning, volunteers worked at D. Newlin Fell Elementary School to revamp the outdoor playground; install insulation on pipes in the gymnasium; build bookshelves and storage cubbies; and paint murals and repair school walls.

Additionally, volunteers gathered with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society at The Navy Yard to donate 250 native trees to area residents for their own personal planting to strengthen the urban tree canopy. This giveaway was made possible through CSX’s partnership with Alliance for Community Trees.

“Rail is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to move freight, and with a network that spans across 23 states and two Canadian provinces, we have a large responsibility to ensure that we’re making a positive impact on the environment,” said Rodney Oglesby, resident vice president of state government affairs, CSX. “We’re proud to bring our focus on the environment to Philadelphia by working with the D. Newlin Fell Elementary School to beautify their learning environment, and partnering with the Alliance for Community Trees to support local tree planting.”

“We’re excited to work with CSX and our local community partners to plant and restore trees across the U.S. It’s a great way to improve the environment, as well as educate our neighbors about the importance of stewardship and instill a lifetime value around protecting and beautifying our planet,” said Sarah Anderson, program director, Alliance for Community Trees.

This is the second event where volunteers, employees and neighbors were encouraged to use #LocalMotive to join an ongoing conversation about CSX’s presence in the communities it serves through volunteerism, job creation, and moving the goods that are essential for the economy. In Pennsylvania, CSX employs more than 1,080 people and handles more than 2 million carloads of freight each year. CSX has major facilities in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Chambersburg, Butler, Chester and Aston. View the #LocalMotive conversation online at www.beyondourrails.org/localmotive.

Mead Avenue Bridge Disassembled, SAVED (+Old Photos?)

Received the following from our correspondent in NW Pennsylvania.   This is slightly off the topic of trains and model railroading, but perhaps some of our readers has some additional information they could share.  These bridges were located in Meadville and Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

FYI, the gentleman who graciously purchased this incredibly historic structure over French Creek in Meadville for preservation would like to restore it as accurately as he possibly can. He needs as many vintage photographs as he can get, especially of ornamental details, in order to faithfully rejuvenate or recreate them, such as the column spires that stood at the end portal corners. The Crawford County Historical Society and other sources have scant few old pictures of the Historic Mead Avenue Bridge. Does anyone know of (or have) any such photos?  Also, if you know the whereabouts of any actual trim / ornamentation from these trusses, please contact me (Nathan Clark ), and I can put you in touch with him. The Mead Avenue Bridge is already 75% dismantled and safely removed for storage and eventual reassembly.

Mead Avenue Bridge web page:

The owner has also purchased the big through-truss bridge over French Creek at Carlton in the northeast corner of Mercer County. If you know of old photographs or surviving features from it, those would be appreciated by the new owner and restoration team, as well.

CSX Employee Honored for Environmental Excellence by Association of American Railroads

Received the following via email.

CSX Employee Honored for Environmental Excellence by Association of American Railroads

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - May 7, 2015 - The Association of American Railroads (AAR) recognized CSX employee Suneil Kuthiala with the John H. Chafee Environmental Excellence Award for his outstanding environmental leadership, especially in the area of fuel efficiency.

Kuthiala is a director of advanced engineering at CSX, with 14 years of service with the company in positions across engineering and technology. Currently, Kuthiala oversees the implementation and development of a technology solution, GE's Trip Optimizer, to improve fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

"CSX has a strong record of industry leadership around environmental excellence, and I'm proud to see Suneil recognized with this distinguished award," said Carl Gerhardstein, assistant vice president of public health, safety and environment. "At CSX, we believe that how you get there matters, and Suneil and his team are leading drastic fuel efficiency improvements that minimize CSX's impact on the environment while simultaneously reducing the company's fuel spend."

Trip Optimizer uses technology to identify fuel efficiency opportunities. Driven by Suneil's leadership, Trip Optimizer is helping CSX deliver on its goal to further reduce GHG emission intensity six to eight percent over 2011 levels by 2020. Currently, Trip Optimizer yields a 174,000-ton average reduction in GHG emissions annually, the equivalent of taking more than 36,000 cars off the road in a single year. CSX has saved 11.8 million gallons of fuel because of the program.

"The major fuel-efficiency benefits we've seen from this program are a testament to the Trip Optimizer team's dedicated efforts and focus on the environment," said John Hart, assistant vice president, process excellence. "This program is changing the way CSX uses technology to improve operational, financial and environmental performance."

The annual Chafee Environmental Excellence Award is named for the late Rhode Island senator who devoted his career to protecting the environment. Kuthiala is the ninth CSX employee to win this award.

Allentown & Auburn debuts

Received the following via email from Kermit Geary, Jr.  Text and photos are his.

May 2nd 2015 was a signature perfect day with the completion of the painting
and lettering of The Allentown and Auburn Railroad's locomotive 206. It was
also a chance to show-case the unit at night thanks to Steve Barry, Michael
Burkhart, and Brian Alesin. It was long couple of months to get to this
point, but the results were worth the wait.

Recreating the 1970's in Scranton, PA

Received the following via email from Kermit Geary, Jr.  Text and photos are his.

The weather yesterday evening (5-6-15) was so nice, I couldn't resist taking a
few shots after work.

Happy Cinco De Mayo!

(Train sightings on 5-5-15.)

NS 64K, a ethanol train that started in Chicago, IL and terminates in Seawaren, NJ, is seen passing through Stanton Station, NJ (Lehigh Line MP 53) around 2:43 on Cinco De Mayo. After being held in Easton, PA for some track work, 64K was definitely kicking up the dust as it headed east pass my vantage point. The NS heritage unit Monongahela is certainly a good looking leader with its light colored paint scheme contrasting nicely with the green spring foliage.
