'Panned' Bessemer SD38AC #866!

Received the following via email from our correspondent in NW Pennsylvania. 

This morning (6-9-14), Brian Plant forwarded to me 26 fabulous pictures he took over this past weekend of operations on the Canadian National's Bessemer Subdivision in stunning light. His images were, as always, terrific photographs. I thought I'd forward along these three, in particular, since the full email has a really big attachment file and I am partial to former B&LE EMD SD38AC #866 in the lead.  

The first view of the ore train coming out of Conneaut Harbor, on the north coast of Ohio in Ashtabula County, shows 11,000 horsepower ganging up on a southbound unit train of Minnesota taconite pellets for the U.S. Steel Edgar Thomson Works at Irvin, PA. The train was snaking up out of the Lake Erie Basin along Conneaut Creek and was about to pass beneath the U.S. Route 20 viaduct.

The second shot shows the 866, earlier, a little further north, as it exited the arches beneath the CSX Transportation Boston-St. Louis main line. The slack water where Conneaut Creek is stilled by reaching the level of Lake Erie at Conneaut Harbor calmly reflects the vibrant orange paint of the EMD as it begins the southward journey.

I saved what I think is the best for last. If you've ever wondered what an ore train doing IndyCar speed would look like, I think this dramatic pan shot gives a pretty good clue! With its Gyralite beneath the horns  hanging prominently out over the nose, as if to point the way, 866 flashes through KO, past a foreground blur of wild mustard and background trees. The train will soon roll out over the long Osgood Viaduct and  climb up the grade toward Kelsey. This is just one of the coolest shots from along The Bessemer Route that I've seen! 

Trip report 5-25-2014

The second day found us on the road west to Huntington, WV where we snooped 
around the CSXT's big repair shop.  LOTS of engines, some in kit form, 
others fresh out of the paint shop in the newest image.  Moseyed west to 
Ceredo, WV and looked at the old KRT operation now run by Sun Coast 
Partners.  Shot most of their roster due to their being shut down for the 
holiday, then headed further west, showing James the operations in the 
Ashland KY area and the big A-K Steel's AMANDA FURNACE.  The blast furnace 
was working and provided James with an idea of just how Bethlehem, PA looked 
like in the 1970's.  Then back to Kenova, WV and a scenic drive along the 
N&W to Williamson on US 52 catching some action along the way.  Williamson 
was quite active with four west bounds and two east bounds before we retired 
for the night.   It was a maddening feeling though to be wakened around 
10:30 PM and watching the NKP 190 roll past the motel!!!  It was probably at 
that moment that it sunk in that this was going to be an awesome event in 
Spencer....

Remembering Robert F. “Bob” Collins

Tonight we’ll have a special presentation showcasing the work of long-time Tri-State friend, the late Bob Collins. A career tower operator on the Erie Railroad, Bob loved steam and used his employee pass to travel the country to find steam. But the Erie was his first love. His photography began in the late 1930s, and Bob in his own way was a trail blazer in that he preferred action photography in an era when the roster-style portraits were more common. Bob could afford the kinds of cameras that could record action. Collins’ photography was seen in many magazines and books during and after the steam era. Tonight’s program focuses on mainline, branch and yard operations of the Eire, NJ&NY, Northern RR of NJ and NYS&W. All the images are from digitally scanned 616 B&W negatives. Presenter John Locke is a north Jersey resident who has collected a great majority of Collins work.

Meeting begins at 7:15 pm & light refreshments may be available. Admission is free, all are welcome. This is our last meeting before the summer.

We will have a selection of books, videos and memorabilia for sale before
the meeting. Light refreshments will be available. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.,

A meet at the LEHL's CP SULLY...

(Train sightings on 6-7-14.)

Got a heads-up that Saturdays NS 212 would have CSX 5433 as its leader. Taking into account how nice the weather was, I made the decision to photograph this train at LEHL MP 40, which is located just west of the Valley Road grade crossing in Hillsborough (NJ). While waiting for 212's appearance, I noticed a westbound headlight slowly coming towards on the main. Hmmm... what have we here, a possible meet? As it turned out that headlight belonged to UP 8611 which was NS's 211 leader holding Main 2 east of the Roycefield Road grade crossing waiting for 212 to pass by on the Main 1, formerly known as the Royce Runner, siding at CP SULLY. This marked the first time I had seen a NS train not have to stop to throw the switch while another train was holding. Prior to that automation, that switch would have to be lined for whatever train was taking the siding and then lined and locked on the main. As a result of that manual operation, either the Valley or Roycefield Road grade crossings would be blocked. It was a smooth operation that helped to expedite the flow of traffic both on the rails and roadways.  

NS 212, lead by CSX 5433 and two unidentified NS engines, approaches LEHL's MP 40 on late Saturday morning.

NS 212 prepares to take the Royce Running track, now referred to as Main 1, while NS 211 hold just east of the Roycefield Road grade crossing in Hillsborough (NJ).

With Main 2 now lined and locked, NS 211 is heading west on the LEHL. Motive power would be UP 8611, UP 3884, NS 8885 and NS 9223.

Trip report 5-24-2014

Greetings one and all.  Spent about 10 days on the road during and after the 
Memorial Day holiday en-route to the StreamLiners at Spencer event at the 
North Carolina Transportation Museum at Spencer, NC.  WOW What an experience 
that was.  But more on that later.

Travelling with a good friend and fellow ARHS Restoration Team member, James 
Benetsky, we followed the CSXT lines from Cumberland to Grafton, then hit a 
few short lines before ending day one in Charleston, WV.  Will be sending 
out daily emails as I get the thousands of photographs processed! 

New Mansfield, OH I-M Facility on ex-EL/Erie RR Main (ASRY)

The Ashland Railway (ASRY) has begun building an intermodal container facility just north of Mansfield, Ohio along the former Erie Lackawanna Railway main line. This photo by Terry Sponsler looks northeast at the construction as the excavating crew grades the large site just east of Mansfield Lahm Airport and north of the Mansfield Speedway. The track in the foreground is the remaining track of the once double-tracked Erie Railroad main line (now ASRY), which connects in Mansfield with the NS (former PRR) main. None of these boxes will roll over Starrucca Viaduct or through North Judson, IN.

ATLANTA - The Peach State Whistle-Stop Safety Train this week starts a 327-mile tour from the heart of South Georgia to the carpet capital of the world, calling attention to highway-rail safety and trespasser awareness.

The train, stopping in nine cities from Valdosta to Dalton in three days, is operated by Norfolk Southern Railway and Operation Lifesaver to raise public awareness about being safe and alert around railroad property and highway-rail grade crossings.

The whistle-stop safety train begins Tuesday, June 3, the sixth annual observance of International Level Crossing Awareness Day, at Valdosta, traveling to Warner Robins with a stopover at Tifton. Wednesday, June 4, the train departs Macon for Jonesboro, with a stop at Barnesville. On Thursday, June 5, the train travels from Atlanta to Dalton, stopping at Rockmart.

Invited passengers include state, county and municipal elected leaders, state and local transportation officials, law enforcement officers and emergency responders, school transportation directors, trucking officials, media, and others who have a vested interest in public safety.

"Our goal is to save lives," said William Miller, Norfolk Southern manager grade crossing safety. "Car-train crashes and casualties caused by trespassing on railroad property are preventable, and we want to remind Georgians to be safe around highway-rail grade crossings and other railroad property."

In 2013, 96 vehicle-train collisions in Georgia resulted in 13 fatalities and 63 injuries. Fifteen people died and 21 people suffered serious injuries while trespassing on railroad property. Nationally, 1,193 people died or were injured seriously in highway-rail grade crossing incidents, and 908 were killed or injured while walking on or near railroad tracks.

"Georgia historically ranks in the top 10 states nationally for vehicle-train collisions and trespass incidents because of the high volume of train and vehicular traffic and the large number of crossings, nearly 8,000," said Jennie Glasgow, Operation Lifesaver state coordinator. The state has one of the most extensive freight rail networks in the U.S., with 5,000 miles of track. "It is imperative that we remind citizens continuously of the inherent dangers of trying to beat a train at a crossing or otherwise trespassing by taking shortcuts on railroad tracks."

The safety train includes two vintage passenger railroad cars restored by Norfolk Southern and outfitted with television monitors showing a live video feed from a camera mounted on the lead locomotive. Passengers see firsthand what engineers see every day from locomotives pulling thousands of tons of freight, keeping Georgia's economy thriving.

The train, powered by two locomotives painted with the Operation Lifesaver logo, also includes the Norfolk Southern Exhibit Car and an NS research car. The Exhibit Car showcases the benefits of rail freight transportation. The research car is a mobile laboratory equipped with computers that continuously acquire and analyze data and monitor track conditions and locomotive performance en route.

The Georgia train is one of four safety whistle-stops Norfolk Southern will operate across 1,569 miles of railroad, stopping in 41 cities in 10 states. June 9-13, the Appalachian train will operate from Cleveland, Tenn., to Lynchburg, Va. The Keystone train will operate from Harrington, Del., to Latrobe, Pa., June 23-16. The Great Midwest whistle-stop will travel from Monroe, Mich., to Moberly, Mo., July 7-11.

NS Ponders Converting from DC to AC Traction Motors on ~Portion~ of 1,200 GE Dash-9s

I know that the attached nugget of news is not the central topic in this article, but it's sure the one that really jumped out at me, considering how NS was a long, lone holdout in finally adopting AC traction at all. This is the first I have heard of any road seriously entertaining converting existing DC-traction units over to AC.  

Quote from news article on Progressive Railroading web site: 

In the meantime, the department is considering the next potential outgrowth of the rebuild effort: converting motors from DC-traction to AC-traction on a portion of NS' 1,200 Dash 9s. Proposals from three companies on three continents are under analysis, and GE is one of the proposers, says Graab. "The conversion would make the units more reliable and we would gain tractive effort," he says.

NORFOLK, VA. - The  Museum of Transportation, St. Louis, and the Virginia Museum of Transportation are in discussions to bring Norfolk and Western Y6a steam engine #2156, currently in the St. Louis museum, back to its place of origin at Roanoke, Va., on a five-year loan for display at the Virginia museum, in a transaction facilitated by Norfolk Southern.

In exchange, the Virginia museum will send to St. Louis a Southern Railway diesel General Motors EMD FTB unit to complement the St. Louis museum's FTA demonstration unit.

"This will reunite the last surviving Y-class locomotive, one of the hardest pulling steam locomotives ever built, with the J-611 and the A-1218 in Roanoke, where all three were designed and built by Norfolk and Western," said Molly Butterworth, cultural site manager for the St. Louis Museum of Transportation. "In return, our historic FTA, built in 1939 to demonstrate to the rail industry the efficiency of diesel power, will be reunited with its complimentary B unit."

"We are thrilled to welcome the Y6a home again," said Bev Fitzpatrick, executive director of the Virginia Museum of Transportation. "We're grateful to the St. Louis Museum of Transportation for this opportunity to reunite three powerful sisters of steam in their home town."

Hershey's iconic smoke stacks...

...loom tall over a westbound NS intermodal train on May 24th, 2014. Over a two year span, the factory that they once towered over has been demolished and produced Hershey candies has moved into a new facility in West Hershey. Gone is the aroma of chocolate that once filled the air here. 

For comparison, take note of the NS H48 that was taken on August 18, 2012 and that unknown intermodal taken on May 24. As Bob Dylan "For the times they are a changing..."

Conrail 'Can Opener' Logo Designer Dies

Tony Palladino designed both of these two 'shattered' logos. As many eyes as have seen his Conrail 'Wheels On Rails' herald, his earlier one is even better known. I am sorry to hear of his passing. (Could it be observed that his life has now come...'full circle'?)

NEW YORK — Many never knew his name, but that didn’t change the mark he left on the rail industry. Literally.
The designer of the famous Conrail “can opener” logo, Tony Palladino, has died at age 84, the New York Times reports.
“People don’t want to look at advertising,” Palladino is quoted in the Times. “People want to get entertained intellectually.”

Paladino grew up in East Harlem in the 1930s and ‘40s. His parents, Italian immigrants, did not speak English and he chose to not speak Italian. Because of this, he used drawings to communicate with his family. He later attended the High School of Music and Art in Manhattan, which provided his basic formal training in art. He later taught at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.
In spite of Conrail’s popularity, Palladino is best known for his work designing the typeface used on the original “Psycho” novel by Robert Bloch, which was later made into a movie by Alfred Hitchcock.

Norfolk Southern CEO gives stockholders a confident outlook for 2014

NORFOLK, VA. - Norfolk Southern CEO Wick Moorman, addressing the company's annual meeting today in Williamsburg, Va., gave stockholders plenty of reasons for continued optimism following a year of record-breaking performance.

"Clearly, 2013 was a big year for us," Moorman said in ticking off records in railway operating revenue, operating income, earnings per share, and operating ratio, the latter a key measure of performance efficiency.

As for 2014, Moorman said, "We came into the new year believing that most of the strength that we saw in our markets in 2013, and particularly in the second half, would continue, and we still feel that way." What wasn't foreseen, he noted, was the most severe winter in years, which adversely affected first-quarter revenues, expenses, and service.

"However, I'm happy to report that the Norfolk Southern operating team came through with flying colors. The result is that today our operating metrics are much improved, and we are steadily progressing to the high service levels we and our customers enjoyed last year."Moorman said, "Once the cold weather departed, we saw our business rebound almost immediately," led by intermodal and energy-related markets, with the auto business also gaining strength. "I'm confident that 2014 will be another very good year for our company," he said.

"The real key to our future and the reason for my confidence is our people. I strongly believe we have the best people in the railroad business, and we're working hard every day to make sure that we capture all of their good ideas on how we can make NS better," Moorman said.

Stockholders ratified appointment of KPMG LLP as auditors and approved an advisory resolution on the compensation of executive officers. The stockholder proposal recommending an independent chair of the board of directors was not presented at the meeting, so no action was taken on the proposal.
