This year’s NERPM, scheduled for Friday and Saturday June 2-3, is
approaching quickly. If you haven’t preregistered please do so soon.
You can preregister on our website:  nerpm.org. You'll also save $5 by
preregistering. The last day to register online is Monday, May 29.

The meet is at the Holiday Inn Springfield South in Enfield, Conn.

Unfortunately, the hotel has sold out for the weekend. If you still
need lodging, please check your favorite online site. There are
several nearby hotels, including a Hampton Inn in Enfield and a
Comfort Inn in East Windsor, Conn. Both are only minutes from the meet
hotel.

We have a tentative clinic schedule on our website:

The meet features dozens of clinics, a large model display, great
vendors, a white elephant table and several manufacturers, including
Rapido, Atlas, ESU, ScaleTrains and True Line Trains. We also expect
some historical societies to attend. Please bring your models to show.
Remember, there is no judging. All models are welcome and encouraged,
even those that are not complete. The model room is truly the heart of
the meet.

We have a variety of great vendors attending, including Funaro &
Camerlengo, Ron’s Books, Bob’s Photo, the Hobby Gallery, Minute Man
Scale Models/Scalecoat, Crusader Rail Services, New England Rail
Service, Bethlehem Car Works, Greg Gordon, Speedwitch Media, Mask
Island Decals, Shortline Model Products, Tom’s Trains, Yarmouth Model
Works and others.

We’ll again have our white elephant room for meet attendees to sell
off surplus equipment. Space is limited so don’t empty your basement!

Each evening we’ll have our fundraising raffle with items donated by
the good people at Athearn, Atlas, ESU, Funaro & Camerlengo, Bob’s
Photo, Ron’s Books, Westerfield, ExactRail, Tangent, Rix Products,
Chooch Loads, Walthers, Intermountain, Kadee,  Microtrains, Moloco,
Bethlehem Car Works and others. We are truly grateful to these great
companies.

On Sunday after the meet, 10 layouts will be open to those who attend the meet.

Today, NS ran an O-52 from Lehighton to Allentown, PA. This is an Air
Products Heat Exchanger move that started in Wilkes Barre, PA and ends at
the Port of Philadelphia. NS 9972 and the BumbleBee...NS 1069 lead the move.

through Bowmanstown, West End Hazard, and Lehigh Gap, passing the ARHS's

Just a reminder, The Garden State Division's Spring Meet will be this Saturday, May 13, at 9:00am.   This will be a joint meet with our Division's neighbor to the south, the New Jersey Division.    Details follow below.       We hope to see you at the meet.    GSD/NJD Spring Joint Event  in Bridgewater, NJ Saturday,  May 13 at 9:00am This year, it is the Garden State Division's turn to host the annual joint meet with the New Jersey Division. The meet will be held on May 13 at the Ted Blum 4-H Center in Bridgewater, NJ, starting at 9:00 AM. A pair of clinics are planned for the morning and a pair of layout tours are planned for the afternoon.  A map to the layouts and local eateries will be provided at the meet. The two clinics presented in the morning are on the subject of scenery. Chris Conway will present a clinic on using static grass and Bill Frankenfield will present a clinic on constructing lightweight and removable scenery. In the afternoon, Dick Genthner will open his 7th version of the Arpee & Western for the first time. Joe Garsick will also have his layout open, featuring many craftsman structures constructed by Bill Rose.  Come join us on May 13! Norfolk Southern is delivering on commitments, CEO tells shareholders

Successful execution of strategic plan is driving service, profitability, growth, and shareholder value

NORFOLK, Va., May 11, 2017 – Norfolk Southern is delivering on commitments to improve corporate performance through successful execution of its strategic plan, CEO James A. Squires said in remarks to the annual meeting of shareholders.

Noting that the best strategy is tested and proven by results, Squires said, “We have a sound strategy, and we are producing results that drive sustainable profitability, high-quality growth, and enhanced shareholder value. We are delivering on our commitments.”

2016 was the first full year of Norfolk Southern’s five-year strategic plan to operate a faster, lower-cost, and more profitable railroad. Achievements in 2016 included an all-time best operating ratio of 68.9 percent, productivity savings of $250 million, near record levels of network service performance, and record locomotive fuel efficiency.

“Through successful execution of our plan, we achieved our key first-year financial and operational targets,” Squires said, “and we are well on pace to achieve our 2020 performance goals.”

Norfolk Southern is off to a strong start on the second year of the strategic plan, Squires said, citing 2017 first-quarter records achieved in operating ratio, income from operations, and earnings per share. The company’s 2020 goals include annual expense savings of more than $650 million; double-digit percentage compound annual growth rate in earnings per share; and an operating ratio – a key measure of operating and financial performance – below 65 percent.

“We are driving growth by providing superior service that optimizes pricing and increases volume and top-line revenue,” Squires said. “We are relentlessly focused on meeting the unique needs of our customers – and we are measuring service excellence as they define it.”

In the long term, service will be a major competitive differentiator for Norfolk Southern and will propel shareholder value, he added.

In official business, based on preliminary results, shareholders re-elected 12 directors for terms expiring in 2018:

·         Erskine B. Bowles, senior advisor and nonexecutive vice chairman of BDT Capital Partners LLC

·         Wesley G. Bush, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Northrop Grumman Corporation

·         Daniel A. Carp, former chairman and chief executive officer of Eastman Kodak Company

·         Mitchell E. Daniels Jr., president of Purdue University

·         Marcela E. Donadio, former partner and Americas Oil & Gas Sector Leader of Ernst & Young LLP

·         Steven F. Leer, former chief executive officer and chairman of Arch Coal Inc.

·         Michael D. Lockhart, former chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Armstrong World Industries Inc.

·         Amy E. Miles, chair and chief executive officer of Regal Entertainment Group Inc.

·         Martin H. Nesbitt, co-founder of The Vistria Group

·         James A. Squires, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Norfolk Southern

·         John R. Thompson, former senior vice president and general manager of Best Buy.com LLC

In other preliminary results, shareholders ratified appointment of KPMG LLP as independent auditors, approved an advisory resolution on the compensation of executive officers, and approved a nonbinding resolution in support of an annual advisory resolution on the compensation of executive officers.
