supports restoration of historic locomotive through sale of Rothko painting
NORFOLK,
VA. – In a fortunate intersection of the worlds of fine art and railroading,
Norfolk Southern has sold a well-known abstract expressionist painting and will
use a portion of the proceeds to help fund the restoration and long-term
maintenance of another American treasure, the Class J No. 611 steam passenger
locomotive.

Chairman and CEO Wick Moorman said NS sold its untitled 1959 Mark Rothko
painting through an auction in New York City on Nov. 14 and will direct $1.5
million of the proceeds to “Fire Up 611!,” the capital campaign to rehab the
famous Norfolk & Western Railway streamliner and return it to passenger
excursion service.
“No.
611 is an American classic, a reflection of a time and a people who put the
country on their backs and carried it into to the modern age of railroading,”
Moorman said. “611 is not an NS, N&W, Virginia, or Roanoke locomotive. It
belongs to everyone and every generation. In that spirit, and on behalf of NS
employees everywhere, I announce our strong support for bringing back a true
national marvel.”
“People
from 15 countries have contributed their time and resources to bring back the
‘Queen of Steam,’” said Bev Fitzpatrick, executive director of 611’s owner, the
Virginia Museum of Transportation (VMT) in Roanoke, Va. “NS’ generous and timely
support gives us the best opportunity to reach the $5 million needed to put this
icon back on the rails and keep her moving for decades.”
611
rolled out of N&W’s Roanoke shops in 1950 and with sister Class A and Y6
locomotives constituted the “Magnificent Three” that pulled passenger and heavy
freight trains during the last two decades of steam railroading in the U.S.
Class J locomotives such as 611 could pull 15 cars at 110 mph, and their
builders once promoted the advanced engineering by showing how several men, with
nothing more than a rope, could pull one on the track. 611 was retired in 1959,
restored for excursion service in 1984, and retired again in 1994. Since then,
611 has been on display at VMT.
The
611 plan contemplates making it available for service in NS’ 21st Century Steam
program in 2014. In this program, several vintage steam locomotives from NS’
past give people throughout the railroad system opportunities to ride behind the
marvelous, powerful locomotives of old, while learning how today’s railroads
create jobs, support the economy, save fuel, protect the environment, and keep
America competitive.

during 611’s time – we all can look forward to the brightest days of America’s
future,” said NS President Jim Squires. “611 represents not just past glory but
infinite possibilities for the future.”
Rothko
(1903-1970) was a Latvian émigré who became one of the U.S.’ most famous
post-World War II artists. He resisted having his works labeled, but art critics
said he wanted people to have spiritual experiences when viewing
them.
NS’
signed Rothko painting was created in 1959. The “oil on paper laid down on
canvas” image measures 29-1/2 by 21-1/2 inches and features amorphous forms that
float on top of each other, “…wonderfully capable of moving the viewer to
extreme states of feeling…” according to Sotheby’s, the auction house.
NS
bought the painting in 1996. It was part of the railroad’s collection of public
area visual art and historical artifacts safeguarded throughout the history of
the corporation, including train models, tools, clocks, safety and service
awards, and maps. Some pieces – including the Rothko -- have been loaned to
museums in the U.S. and abroad for exhibitions.

Riders on Amtrak train from Philly to NYC get an unexpected detour

Riders on an Amtrak train from Philadelphia to New York took the scenic route.
According to a story on CBS Philly, the train left Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station last Thursday and, instead of a direct path to New York Penn Station via New Jersey and the Northeast Corridor, somehow ended up on the SEPTA Regional Rail System in the Philadelphia suburbs.
The train carrying 130 passengers traveled several miles before the mistake was realized, then stopped at the Bala Cynwyd station about 8 miles northwest of the 30th Street Station, according to CBS Philly.
The passengers were shepherded into a different train and eventually ended up at their correct destination in midtown Manhattan.
In a statement, Amtrak said: “An investigation was launched and the crew has been held out of work until they can be fully debriefed and additional training can be conducted.”

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - November, 21, 2013 - CSX announced today that the Wasden Road/I-65 Industrial Site in Montgomery, Alabama, has been designated a CSX Select Site.
"We are excited to add this 415-acre, manufacturing-zoned property to our Select Site program," said Clark Robertson, assistant vice president, regional development, CSX. "Its strategic location near I-65 in an area of strong industrial demand, along with superior infrastructure, make this a compelling option for manufacturing firms looking to locate a facility in Alabama, and more specifically in the Montgomery area."
Select Sites are locations for manufacturing facilities along the CSX network that can be developed quickly since standard land use issues and comprehensive due diligence items have been previously addressed. "Through the Select Site program, we can significantly reduce the time it takes for companies to evaluate a competitive site, and ultimately construct their facility and bring products to market," said Robertson.
CSX introduced the Select Site program in 2012 to better serve customers by creating a certification program for premier, rail-served properties located on the CSX network. CSX partnered with The Austin Company, a nationally recognized site selection firm, to screen candidate sites and assist communities with the application and certification process.
"Few properties offer the combination of proximity to an interstate, over a mile of mainline frontage, and the necessary utility infrastructure already installed to the site," said Jonathan Gemmen, senior location consultant, The Austin Company.
To receive CSX Select Site designation, the location must meet a rigorous list of criteria, including infrastructure and utility availability, environmental reviews, appropriate zoning and entitlement, air quality permitting, rail serviceability, proximity to highways or interstates, and other attributes. Once certified, the sites are featured on a new user-friendly web portal that includes press releases, promotional materials and direct marketing to site selection professionals.
Since inception in 2011, 13 locations across the 23-state CSX network have received a Select Site designation. Two companies have announced intentions to place new facilities at separate Select Sites with several more in the final stages.

"LNG technology has the potential to offer one of the most significant developments in railroading since the transition from steam to diesel in the 1950s," said Oscar Munoz, executive vice president and chief operating officer, CSX Corporation. "That change took many years to complete and began with a lot of unknowns, and this one is no different. But aggressively exploring this technology is consistent with CSX's focus on tomorrow, its longstanding commitment to efficient and environmentally friendly transportation, and its role in helping to promote U.S. energy independence. GE Transportation has the know-how to provide the right LNG solution for our locomotive fleet and help us better understand the feasibility of LNG technology from a safety, operations and economic perspective."
Natural gas-fueled locomotives can travel longer distances without refueling stops, as well as provide environmental and economic benefits. Adoption of natural gas-fueled locomotives will make freight rail an even more attractive transportation solution and furthers the industry's ability to absorb traffic from the nation's highways in an environmentally efficient way.
"Locomotives are at an inflection point in balancing engine performance with efficiency and adherence to emissions standards," said Russell Stokes, chief executive officer, GE Transportation. "As we enter a new era of energy sources and what's possible for rail transport, we are excited to partner with CSX and lead the LNG transformation for the industry."
GE has been testing low-pressure natural gas technology since spring of 2013, and is working closely with CSX and other Class 1 partners. Field tests are expected to begin in 2014. GE's NextFuel(TM) kits allow railroads to use natural gas as a fuel source, reducing emissions and potentially reducing fuel costs while not compromising performance. An Evolution Series locomotive equipped with the NextFuel Natural Gas Retrofit Kit meets US EPA Tier 3 emission standards.
CSX will be working over the next few months to develop a test plan and secure regulatory concurrence. For CSX, GE Transportation will deploy its new NextFuelT Natural Gas Retrofit Kits that enable existing Evolution Series locomotives to operate with dual fuel capabilities. Military Friendly Employers list by G.I. Jobs magazine
NORFOLK, VA. – Norfolk Southern
has been named one of the nation’s Top 100 Military Friendly
Employers® by
G.I. Jobs magazine in its 11th annual list recognizing
companies with the best military recruiting and hiring practices.
Making its seventh appearance on
the list, Norfolk Southern ranked 75th. The list of 100 companies
represents the top 2 percent of more than 5,000 eligible companies with annual
revenues exceeding $500 million. Criteria include strength of company military
recruiting efforts, percentage of new hires with prior military service,
retention programs, and company policies toward National Guard and Reserve
service.
"The railroad is an excellent
environment for veterans to continue using their training and leadership skills
in a second career,” said Norfolk Southern President James A. Squires, a U.S.

Eliasson reiterated expectations for 2013 earnings per share growth that will be slightly up from last year despite continued headwinds in both the export and domestic coal markets.
"The CSX team continues to overcome significant headwinds as the energy markets evolve in favor of natural gas and away from coal," said Eliasson said. "During this transition, we have still been able to generate earnings per share growth and value for shareholders as we quickly adapt to market changes and carefully manage the things we can control the most. We are confident that CSX will emerge an even stronger, more vibrant company as the operating environment stabilizes and the economy improves."
Eliasson highlighted the sustained growth in CSX's merchandise and intermodal businesses, which now comprises more than 80 percent of the company's volume. The company expects that business to continue growing at a rate above the general economy. Intermodal, a key driver of growth, now represents 40 percent of overall volume and is expected to increase further, reflecting the attractive economic value of converting freight from highway to rail.
CSX employs a dual intermodal strategy that includes both high-density corridors and a hub-and-spoke philosophy that also creates service density to open new small and medium-sized markets - a strategy the company believes is a differentiator in the intermodal marketplace. CSX also recently completed the first phase of double-stack clearances in its National Gateway initiative, which will create a more efficient rail route to link Mid-Atlantic ports with Midwestern markets. When the National Gateway is complete in 2015, the percentage of the company's intermodal traffic moving in double-stack lanes will be in the mid-90s.
To prepare for long-term growth, the company is building new terminals to expand its reach in markets such as central Florida, Pittsburgh and Montreal. In addition, the company continues to invest in existing terminals to further increase efficiency throughout its network, such as an expansion of its state-of-the-art Northwest Ohio hub, which opened in 2011 and has helped alleviate historic congestion in Chicago while opening up connectivity to markets in the Midwest.

Vice President Biden and Secretary Foxx had a full day while visiting the intermodal facility, taking part in a driving tour and training simulator demonstration as well as meeting employees and local residents. During spoken remarks, the Vice President, Secretary of Transportation and CSX executives discussed the importance of infrastructure investment in improving America's competitiveness, strengthening the middle class, and growing the American economy.
"Infrastructure projects like this cutting-edge facility are the backbone of a growing American middle class and a thriving American economy," said Anthony Foxx, secretary, U.S. Department of Transportation. "This facility provides tremendous benefits locally, regionally and for the entire nation."
"In an area where service from East Coast ports once took up to a week, it now only takes two to three days for goods to be shipped through the facility and delivered to the customer's door," said Oscar Munoz, executive vice president and chief operating officer, CSX Transportation. "We are very proud of our role in keeping America competitive by investing in infrastructure here in Ohio, at mid-Atlantic ports, and throughout our network. CSX Employee Wins Rail Industry's Environmental Excellence Award
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - November 5, 2013 - The Association of American Railroads (AAR) today awarded its highest honor for environmental professionals, the 2013 North American Environmental Employee Excellence Award, to CSX manager of environmental remediation Matthew Adkins. Adkins was one of seven industry professionals nominated for this annual award, and is the sixth CSX employee to win in the last 12 years.
Adkins is a longtime CSX employee who began his career as an environmental specialist in Corbin, Ky., in 1996. He recently led a team that successfully remediated the former Gautier Oil creosote treatment plant in Gautier, Miss., spending nine years investigating, designing, and executing a plan to restore and enhance the 24-acre coastal site. Now part of a conservation easement, the site was granted Wildlife at Work certification by the Wildlife Habitat Council.
"Matt is an exemplary steward of CSX's environmental efforts who has successfully managed a number of complex remediation projects, demonstrating strong leadership, creativity and superior project management skills," said Skip Elliott, vice president, public safety, health and environment. "Across projects, he consistently engages stakeholders including local leaders and community organizations to generate the best possible results for everyone involved."
Adkins is a strong proponent of continuing education opportunities and uses his time and talent to develop training courses and materials for CSX employees and other industry professionals. He was instrumental in the creation of the Direct to Locomotive Fuel Vendor Review protocol, which he continues to manage across the CSX network. This successful program evaluates the work performance by the vendors and provides a means for additional training and constructive feedback.
Adkins is the second CSX employee to be recognized with an industry environmental award this year. In May, the AAR named Rick McNey, CSX manager of maintenance for the Curtis Bay Pier in Baltimore, MD, winner of the 2013 John H. Chafee Environmental Excellence Award for his commitment to environmental stewardship.

A police officer injured when a NJ Transit train crashed into his squad car
Thursday morning has been released from the hospital, officials confirmed.
Pennsylvania Amtrak sightings for November 2nd
(Train sightings on 11-2-13.)
Amtrak’s Autumn Express train, with Amtrak 145 and 822 in command of the
sixteen car consist, is seen passing over the Vinegar Ferry Road underpass on
November 2 on NS’s Port Road tracks. Back in the early 1800’s, a German
landholder named Christian Winiker operated a ferry near this location.
Pronunciation of his name soon became locally corrupted to "Vinegar" and today
this location is known as Vinegar Ferry. In another mile, the Autumn Express
will cross the Susquehanna River via Shocks Mill Bridge on its way to Harrisburg
and return to Philadelphia via the Port Road and Columbia Secondary.
Amtrak's Keystone Service train 664, with Amtrak 919 (AEM-7), makes its
9:47 stop at Elizabethtown to pick up passengers heading to Philadelphia and
points east.
Hershey (PA)- Nine Months later
(Train sightings on 11-2-13.)
Back on February 10,
2013 while visiting Hershey, I was fortunate enough to photograph NS H2A, also
known as "The Hershey Shifter", with NS 5662 (EMD GP38-2; ex-PC 7726, NS 2907
& CR 7726, all GP38s) leading a cut of cars west. In the background was the
iconic smokestacks with "Hershey" spelled out in the brickwork. It is nine
months later, November 2 when a similar scene is taken. NS 9535 (GE C40-9W) plus
two unidentified diesels leads what I assumed was an empty coal cars west.
However there is something missing in this scene. Those two smokestacks are
still there but the manufacturing plant has been eliminated from this
scene.

Toys for Tots Middletown & New Jersey Railroad 2013 - Hudson Valley & NJ

Members of the public are encouraged to drop off new, unwrapped toys at various collection points along the route in the first two weeks of December. At each stop, one or more businesses or organizations has a large collection box. All information will be posted to _www.facebook.com/OperationToyTrain_
On Saturday, December 7th, the train will stop in Rochelle Park, Hawthorne, Wortendyke, Wyckoff, Oakland, Pompton Lakes, and Butler along the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway. Sunday, December 8th the train will start off in Warwick, and continue on to Sugar Loaf , Campbell Hall, Montgomery, and Walden along the Middletown & New Jersey Railroad. On Saturday, December 14th , the train will stop in Flanders, Ledgewood, Kenvil, Dover, and Rockaway along the Morristown & Erie Railway.
The schedule for December 8^th is as follows:
Train will be parked in Warwick overnight December 8, and the collection of toys will begin in Warwick at 9am. We will depart Warwick at 10am and arrive in Sugarloaf at 10:20am. The train will depart Sugarloaf at 11:15am and arrive in Campbell Hall at 12:05pm. It will depart at 12:50pm and head to Montgomery and arrive at 1:15pm. It will then arrive for its last stop in Walden at 2:35. The train will depart Walden at 3:20.
The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November, and December each year and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community where the campaign is conducted.

The Middletown & New Jersey Railroad is proud to
announce that on December 8, 2013 we will operate our Second Annual "Operation
Toy Train" in the Hudson Valley Area. Our mission is to collect donated toys for
the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Foundation. "Operation Toy Train"
has been a program since 2009 in NJ. In 2012, more than 10,000 toys were
collected on the train. All toys collected will be distributed to needy families
in the area. Along the route, the train will stop at 5 locations in NY where
members of the public can drop off toys, see Santa Claus, experience a variety
of working railroad equipment, and meet members of the Marine Corps.
Five railroads are loaning engines, rolling stock, and use of their tracks to "Operation Toy Train". They are the Morristown & Erie, New York, Susquehanna & Western, Norfolk Southern, Middletown & New Jersey, and New Jersey Transit. president and state senator H. Craig Lewis
LANCASTER,
PA. – In a private ceremony today attended by Norfolk Southern CEO Wick Moorman,
Lt. Governor Jim Cawley, State Senator Tommy Tomlinson, Drexel University
President John Fry, and numerous government and business officials, family and
friends, NS renamed its Dillerville Yard here in honor of H. Craig Lewis. After
serving as state senator for the 6th District in Bucks County for
five terms (1975-1994), Lewis joined NS as vice president corporate affairs in
1997, retiring from the railroad in 2009. He died unexpectedly earlier this
year.
“Because
of his experience and respect from both sides of the aisle in Harrisburg, Craig
was a key part of our integration of Conrail’s assets in Pennsylvania in the
late 1990s,” said Moorman. “He later led our passenger and transit policy team
and managed many complex projects, including the sale of Conrail’s Boonton Line
to New Jersey Transit and the NS phase of the Lancaster Northwest Gateway
Project. Craig brought energy, creativity, and humor to every initiative and was
able to bring diverse perspectives together in a collaborative manner.
Dedicating our yard in Lancaster in honor of Craig is a fitting
tribute.”

a state senator, Craig Lewis dedicated himself to community service and economic
development,” said Cawley. “That is why Norfolk Southern could not have selected
a more appropriate project to dedicate to his memory.”
“Craig
was a fine man who honorably served his district and constituents,” said
Tomlinson. “I am proud to have followed his legacy in the Senate and to have
called him my friend.”
“Craig
was a dear friend and a trusted colleague. He quickly grasped the strategic
importance of the Northwest Gateway Project for the City of Lancaster, Franklin
& Marshall College, and Lancaster General Health,” said Fry. “He became our
partner in addressing the many technical and logistical hurdles involved with
making this project a reality. I am very pleased that Norfolk Southern has
chosen to honor Craig for his service to their company and to this community by
naming this rail facility the H. Craig Lewis Yard.”
The
expansion of Lewis Yard began in early 2009 following several years of studies
and design and will be completed next month. The yard expansion is part of the
Lancaster Northwest Gateway Project, a $75 million plan to remediate and
redevelop approximately 75 acres of urban brownfields to enhance economic
development opportunities in the City of Lancaster by connecting the city street
grid system, creating urban green spaces, and providing campus development sites
for Franklin & Marshall College and Lancaster General Health on land
formerly owned by Armstrong World Industries and NS. The final segment of the
Gateway Project will begin in the spring of 2014 when the railroad transfers
ownership of approximately 28 acres of its yard east of Dillerville Road to
Franklin & Marshall and Lancaster General. This work is expected to take 12
months to complete.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - October 31, 2013 - CSX Transportation Inc. has signed a landmark agreement with four labor unions that sets new standards of quality and productivity at the company's Huntington (W.Va.) Locomotive Shop.
The agreement covers a variety of work, including locomotive rebuilds. The unions signing the agreement are the Transportation Communications Union's Carmen Division, the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, and the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers.
"This is an innovative contract by CSX and its union-represented employees at the Huntington facility," said Ken Mason, CSX vice president-labor relations. "This is a true win-win agreement that provides the right incentives for improved worker flexibility and the ability to drive significant improvements in quality, production and efficiency."
Jeff Doerr, president and directing general chairman of International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, District 19, also praised the agreement. "This historic agreement proves that by working efficiently, railroad unions can compete with outside contractors even at higher rates of pay with superior benefits," Doerr said.
Under the agreement signed October 23, members of all four unions may perform all assigned work without regard to craft or union affiliation. Covered employees will received a $500 signing bonus, a $1 hourly efficiency differential, and guaranteed employment for the duration of the four-year agreement.
In addition, the current ratio of members of each union currently working at the Huntington Locomotive Shop will be preserved, Mason said.
