A Central New Jersey train crashes into Newark Bay, killing 48. Investigators find that the engineer, Lloyd Wilburn, ran through three warning signals, missed the raised drawbridge, and did not attempt to apply the brakes until the train was eight feet away from the edge. It is one of the worst crashes in the Northeast U.S.
