CSX and Partners Give Back “Beyond Our Rails” in Philadelphia

Philadelphia, Pa. – May 12, 2015 – More than 180 volunteers from CSX, its national service partners Action for Healthy Kids, City Year and Alliance for Community Trees, and community and school representatives gathered in Philadelphia on Saturday to improve a school facility and the local environment.

Throughout the morning, volunteers worked at D. Newlin Fell Elementary School to revamp the outdoor playground; install insulation on pipes in the gymnasium; build bookshelves and storage cubbies; and paint murals and repair school walls.

Additionally, volunteers gathered with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society at The Navy Yard to donate 250 native trees to area residents for their own personal planting to strengthen the urban tree canopy. This giveaway was made possible through CSX’s partnership with Alliance for Community Trees.

“Rail is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to move freight, and with a network that spans across 23 states and two Canadian provinces, we have a large responsibility to ensure that we’re making a positive impact on the environment,” said Rodney Oglesby, resident vice president of state government affairs, CSX. “We’re proud to bring our focus on the environment to Philadelphia by working with the D. Newlin Fell Elementary School to beautify their learning environment, and partnering with the Alliance for Community Trees to support local tree planting.”

“We’re excited to work with CSX and our local community partners to plant and restore trees across the U.S. It’s a great way to improve the environment, as well as educate our neighbors about the importance of stewardship and instill a lifetime value around protecting and beautifying our planet,” said Sarah Anderson, program director, Alliance for Community Trees.

This is the second event where volunteers, employees and neighbors were encouraged to use #LocalMotive to join an ongoing conversation about CSX’s presence in the communities it serves through volunteerism, job creation, and moving the goods that are essential for the economy. In Pennsylvania, CSX employs more than 1,080 people and handles more than 2 million carloads of freight each year. CSX has major facilities in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Chambersburg, Butler, Chester and Aston. View the #LocalMotive conversation online at www.beyondourrails.org/localmotive.
