CSX and Partners Join in Service at Burrville Elementary School
Employees and Volunteers Give Back "Beyond Our
Rails" in Washington D.C.
Washington, D.C. - April 27, 2015 - More than 80 volunteers
from CSX, its national service partners Action for Healthy Kids, City Year and
Alliance for Community Trees, and community and school representatives gathered
at Burrville Elementary School in Washington, D.C. on Saturday to enhance
school facilities.
The event showcased how CSX aims to build a better tomorrow
"Beyond Our Rails" by working to enhance four key areas: safety,
community, environment, and health and wellness. Throughout the morning, volunteers
painted safety murals in the hallways; created playground stencils and restored
a basketball court; built a school garden and greenhouse; and planted trees.
That same day, CSX also provided a grant to the Alliance for
Community Trees to plant additional native trees at University Park Elementary
School, and sponsored the Anacostia Watershed Society's annual Earth Day
Anacostia River Clean-Up.
"The events are an example of how passionate our
employees are about giving back to the community," said Tori Kaplan,
assistant vice president-corporate social responsibility. "By working with
service partners across our network, we're able to make a positive impact in
the daily lives of the employees, customers and neighbors in the communities
where we live and work."
"We are proud to work together with CSX and our local
community partners to increase physical activity among students and foster
lifelong healthy habits that lead to academic success," said Rob
Bisceglie, CEO of Action for Healthy Kids. "Saturday's event was a perfect
ending to 'Every Kid Healthy Week,' which showcased the great work schools like
Burrville Elementary are doing to improve the health of their schools and the
students they serve."
Volunteers, employees and neighbors were also encouraged to
join #LocalMotive, an ongoing conversation to highlight examples of CSX's
presence in the communities it serves through service and volunteerism, job
creation, and moving the goods that are essential for the economy. View the
conversation online at www.beyondourrails.org/localmotive.
