Hunting for some autumn color...

(Train sightings on 10-30-10.)

In my quest to get some LEHL fall foliage shots, Saturday’s travels took me to a number of places in NJ. This day would start out in Pattenburg where Musconetcong Mountain had a wide swath of golden foliage made even brighter with ample sunshine. Alas, the one item needed to complete this scene, namely an eastbound train, never passed by my location. Two westbounders, NS 21M and NS 11J (with 89 autoracks) did pass by but my preference on this day was for an eastbound train. Following the sun east to Stanton Station, I finally managed to photograph some color along the ROW. Unfortunately it was a red fox that that I spotted and photographed as it crossed over the ballast.

Later in the day at Hillsborough’s Valley Road grade crossing (MP40), another “autumn color” appeared. This time it was the UP 7392’s amour yellow leading NS 212 as it headed east around 2:30.

NS 19G was holding on the Roycefield Runner siding until 212 cleared. As 19G pulled out on to the main, the trees color’s adjacent to the ROW were also bland and nothing to be whistled at.

Oh well, guess there is always next fall to try and capture that fall foliage image, eh?

Norfolk Southern: Green and getting greener

NORFOLK, VA. - For environmentalism in 2010, Norfolk Southern Corporation's score improved to 71.28 of 100 points, and its ranking improved to 233 among the 500 largest publicly traded companies in America, according to NEWSWEEK magazine.

The evaluation reflects NS' worldwide environmental footprint, based on more than 700 separate metrics; an assessment of the company's green initiatives; and a poll of CEOs, environmental officers, and other green experts, according to NEWSWEEK.

Companies measured in the report were included by virtue of their revenue, market capitalization, and number of employees.

The NS numbers compared with 67.61 points and 338 overall in 2009.

"A benchmark such as this gives us useful perspective," said F. Blair Wimbush, NS' vice president real estate and corporate sustainability officer. "Customers and communities expect us to set the pace for sustainability in the rail transportation arena. The rankings help validate that our green performance is solid and improving."

Norfolk Southern breaks ground on new $95 million intermodal terminal in Greencastle, Pa.

GREENCASTLE, PA. – Today Norfolk Southern CEO Wick Moorman was joined by Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, Federal Railroad Administration Deputy Administrator Karen Rae, Rep. Bill Shuster, and other state and local dignitaries to officially break ground for the new Franklin County Regional Intermodal Facility in Greencastle, Pa.

The $95 million facility, part of the railroad’s multi-state Crescent Corridor initiative to establish an efficient, high-capacity intermodal freight rail route between the Gulf Coast and the Northeast, occupies a 200-acre site adjacent to the planned Antrim Commons Business Park and is expected to open in 2012.

Today’s groundbreaking is for the first of four new Crescent Corridor intermodal terminals Norfolk Southern plans to construct over the next two years.

“The Franklin County Regional Intermodal Facility is ideally located to serve the Mid-Atlantic region and is a critical component of our Crescent Corridor,” said Moorman. “We commend Governor Rendell for his dedication and commitment to improve transportation infrastructure not only in the commonwealth but throughout the U.S. We also want to thank Representative Shuster for his involvement in our efforts to form public-private partnerships to create jobs and economic development opportunities throughout Pennsylvania. Finally, we must recognize the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the Franklin County Area Development Corporation, and Antrim Township for their active participation in the planning of this project.”

“There is no doubt that this type of integrated logistics hub creates good jobs, generates revenue, and provides substantial environmental benefits,” Governor Rendell said. “Pennsylvania has invested heavily in freight rail because it is a smart, environmentally friendly, cost-effective infrastructure investment. I will continue to advocate for rail freight investments at the state and national level.”

“Intermodal terminals like the one Norfolk Southern broke ground on today are proven centers for investment, infrastructure improvement, and business growth,” said Congressman Shuster, Ranking Republican on the House Subcommittee on Railroads. “The improvements being made to Exit 3 on I-81 are a perfect example of this. I have long supported investment in freight rail because it’s efficient, safe, and environmentally responsible. I have no doubt that this facility will open a new chapter in Pennsylvania’s proud railroading history and create new opportunities for growth here in Franklin County and beyond.”

The Crescent Corridor is a program of improvements to infrastructure and other facilities geared toward creating a high capacity 2,500 mile intermodal route spanning from New Jersey to Louisiana that touches 26 percent of the nation’s population and 30 percent of the nation’s manufacturing output. It provides the shortest intermodal double stack route between the South and the Northeast. When fully operational it will handle more rail freight traffic faster and more reliably, creating or benefiting more than 70,000 green jobs by 2030 and producing these estimated annual benefits:

1.3 million long-haul trucks diverted from interstates
$141 million in accident avoidance savings
1.8 million tons in CO2 reduction
$565 million in congestion savings
$262 million in highway maintenance savings
163 million gallons in fuel savings

The Crescent Corridor program of projects is estimated to cost $2.5 billion for full development. In addition to the Greencastle facility, Crescent Corridor projects currently planned for development include new independent intermodal facilities at Birmingham, Ala., Charlotte, N.C. and Memphis, Tenn.; the expansion of intermodal terminals in Harrisburg and Philadelphia, Pa.; and the addition of freight rail capacity in Virginia and Mississippi. In addition to facility investments, the program includes significant investments in rail route improvements consisting of additional passing tracks, double track projects, improved signaling systems, and other track speed enhancements.

When the Crescent Corridor is fully operational, annual benefits to Pennsylvania are expected to include more than 806,000 long-haul trucks diverted to rail, almost 10 million gallons of fuel saved, carbon dioxide reduction of 106,000 tons, more than $33 million in traffic congestion savings, and avoidance of an estimated $8.3 million in accident costs. Over the next ten years 26,000 jobs in Pennsylvania are expected to be created or enhanced by Crescent Corridor projects. Norfolk Southern also has improvements planned for existing intermodal terminals in Harrisburg and Philadelphia, along with $27 million in track and signal upgrades.

The proposed investment in the Franklin County Regional Intermodal Facility will create the capacity to handle more than 85,000 containers and trailers annually. The terminal will utilize the latest in gate and terminal automation technology, which shortens the waiting time for trucks entering the terminal, thereby reducing exhaust emissions and improving truck driver productivity. Four intermodal trains daily will serve the terminal.

Belle Mead NJ's Route 206 bridge days are numbered!

(Train sightings on 10-17-10.)

A project to replace the Route 206 bridge over CSX's Trenton Line has begun as evidenced by the clearing of the surrounding area. This project will demolish the current bridge and be replaced with a new structure on an improved road alignment. The estimated cost of all of this will be $24.77 million. The clearing of the trees has provided with a photo location, albeit a temporary one, along a line that does not have many photo locations due to the trees adjacent to the ROW. Seen here CSX Q439 is westbound with CSX 581 (AC44CW) and CSX 8153 (ex-LN 8153; SD40-2) on October 17th at 2:20.

"One Line, Infinite Possibilities" characterizes Norfolk Southern approach to freight rail transportation

NORFOLK, VA. -- One railroad line supports the American economy and brings a world of opportunity and benefits to its customers and communities.

With that in mind, Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) begins its "One Line, Infinite Possibilities" advertising campaign that builds on the company's "Thoroughbred of Transportation" communications program, now in its 28th year.

The campaign begins with a new television commercial, "Connects," that runs now through the election season on various programs on the CNN and Fox News cable networks. The 30-second spot was produced by Norfolk Southern's creative partner, rp3 Agency, of Bethesda, Md.

CEO Wick Moorman said the "One Line, Infinite Possibilities" tagline reflects the fact that, "NS is the backbone of an integrated logistics system that makes modern life possible. We have extraordinary abilities to offer in terms of service, safety, economy, sustainability, and the ways in which we connect the businesses and people who depend on us."

The "Connects" spot makes a graphic play off the "speedlines" in NS' widely-known corporate logo. It will be joined by print, Internet, out-of-home, and social media advertisements, and a second commercial, called "Engine," beginning early in 2011.

Norfolk Southern handles one of its largest vessel coal loadings

NORFOLK, VA. -- Norfolk Southern handled one of its largest cargo loadings of the last 20 years at its Pier 6 coal transloading facility at Lamberts Point in Norfolk.

On Sept. 29, Norfolk Southern loaded 152,681 net tons (138,512 metric tons) of coal into the M/V Linda Dream, destined for ThyssenKrupp Steel in Flushing, the Netherlands. The coal came from Integrity Coal and Mechel in 1,475 railroad coal cars. T. Parker Host Inc. was the ship agent/broker.

The Linda Dream loading was one of the largest since Pier 6's 1989 loading of 151,773 net tons for the Nord Atlantic, the 1991 loading of 153,263 net tons for the Doceserra, and the 1998 loading of 157,645 net tons for the M/V Irongate.

"Such a large transfer is exciting, but the real story is the continuing effectiveness of the partnership between Norfolk Southern, coal suppliers, and agents," said Danny D. Smith, NS senior vice president energy and properties. "We are proud to serve with them in the competitive transportation chain that brings the raw materials essential for making steel to the world."

Jeff G. Yates, terminal superintendent at Pier 6, praised the ability of the railroaders there. "They exemplify safe, reliable transportation," he said. "Wherever steel is used, wherever the lights come on, that's a reminder of the skill they bring to bear for our customers."

At 948 feet long and 147 feet and eight-inches wide, the Linda Dream is one of the larger vessels to call at Pier 6, though the recent length record is held by the Hyundai Continental (1,014-feet) and the recent beam record is held by the Nord Atlantic and the Venture (both 176 foot and one-inch).

Norfolk Southern has been transferring coal and coke from railroad cars into ocean-going export and domestic vessels in the Lamberts Point area since 1884, when it opened Pier 1. In the first half of the 1900s, new Piers 2-5 featured improvements in speed and capacity and even loaded coal into a number of famous vessels, such as those used in Admiral Byrd's 1933 Antarctica expedition.

Pier 6 opened for business in 1962 as the hemisphere's largest, fastest, and most efficient transloading facility. In 1999, Pier 6 dumped its billionth ton of coal and became the only facility in the world to have reached that milestone.

Most of the coal moving through Pier 6 originates in Southwest Virginia, Southern West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Alabama. It is shipped to several dozen countries as well as to coastwise domestic receivers. Pier 6 is situated with access to Hampton Roads' deep 50-foot channel, which allows modern vessels to make productive use of their large holds.

Initial investigations have uncovered an incompatibility problem between the new Atlas HO Genset Locomotive and the new MRC Tech 6 Power Pack which could result in circuit board burn out.

Atlas strongly recommends that customers who have purchased this locomotive do not operate it with this specific MRC power pack. Atlas will inform customers of more complete findings as soon as possible.

Thank You
