(Train sightings on 5-26-13.)

It certainly was a surprise for me to see CSX's K455's motive power as two CN units. CN 2144 (C40-8W) and CN 2124 (C40-8) are seen passing by the former Reading station (MP 50) on CSX's Trenton Line around 8:05 AM in Belle Mead, NJ.

New Knoxville bulk transfer terminal extends reach of Norfolk Southern’s rail network for shippers of aggregates and bulk commodities

KNOXVILLE, TENN. – Norfolk Southern opened its new $5.9 million Thoroughbred Bulk Transfer terminal today in Knoxville.

Thoroughbred Bulk Transfer (TBT) terminals are specialized facilities that allow customers to transfer a large array of commodities between rail cars and trucks. The facilities allow customers without rail sidings to receive the benefits of rail economics and service quality.

The new terminal is located adjacent to I-275 and fewer than two miles from I-40 and I-75 at 849 Tennessee Ave., in Knoxville, adjacent to Norfolk Southern’s rail yard. The facility can handle dry and liquid bulk commodities such as flour, corn starch, and corn syrup, as well as aggregates such as sand and cement. It features 48 car spots, all in containment, a certified truck scale, and is fully paved, fenced, and lighted.

“The Knoxville TBT is well-positioned to reach local markets as well as extend the reach of our TBT facility network even more effectively to serve markets such as Kingsport, Loudon, and Morristown in East Tennessee as well as Western North Carolina and Southwest Virginia,” NS Group Vice President Scott McGregor told a group of city officials, customers, and guests gathered for the opening of the terminal.

Among those attending today’s event were Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and Knoxville Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Mike Edwards.

“I want to thank Norfolk Southern for their continued support of the Knoxville community,” Edwards said. “This new bulk transfer facility will help in our industrial recruitment efforts to sell the region to companies that are interested in shipping raw materials via rail.”

Norfolk Southern has a network of 31 TBT facilities in 17 states, which are operated by independent contractors who are industry experts in facilitating safe and efficient bulk transfer and distribution. The new Knoxville terminal is operated by RSI Leasing Inc. More information on Norfolk Southern’s transload network is available at Norfolk Southern Distribution Services.

CSX Urges Caution Near Tracks During Memorial Day

Received the following via email.

CSX Urges Caution Near Tracks During Memorial Day

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - May 24, 2013 - Did you know that an average train can take more than a mile to stop? CSX (NYSE: CSX) and its employees remind motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution near railroad tracks as the busy Memorial Day weekend approaches, marking the unofficial start of the summer season. To ensure safety, CSX urges all travelers to obey warning signs and devices at grade crossings and to stay off railroad property.

"Trains cannot stop quickly," said Terry Ludban, director - community affairs and safety. "To remain safe this summer and all year round, everyone should use good judgment, obey the law and stay away from train tracks."

CSX offers these important reminders:

1. Obey posted signs at railroad crossings. Last year, 270 people died at crossings nationwide. To protect yourself and others, carefully observe all posted signs and warnings at crossings and always expect a train.

2. Do not walk or ride ATVs or other recreational vehicles on train tracks. People struck by trains while illegally on railroad property is the leading cause of rail-related deaths, according to the Federal Railroad Administration. Train tracks are private property and trespassing on railroad property is against the law.

3. Do not trespass on bridges or in tunnels. Trains overhang tracks for three feet or more, and do not always operate on predictable schedules. Being on bridges or in tunnels makes an already dangerous situation even more hazardous.

CSX actively promotes safety around railroad tracks. The company's "Play it Safe" campaign encourages people to stay away from tracks and use caution at crossings. Supporting the campaign is NASCAR driver David Ragan, who drives the #34 car for Front Row Motorsports. He will be racing at Charlotte this weekend with a Play it Safe bumper sticker on his car.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - May 21, 2013 - As part of its continued commitment to honor military veterans and their families, CSX Corporation (NYSE: CSX) launched the "Drop and Give Them 10" campaign, a national fundraiser for Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP).

The "Drop and Give Them 10" campaign runs through May 29.

"At CSX, we are grateful for the courageous service of our nation's military veterans to protect our hard-won freedoms," said Michael J. Ward, chairman, president and CEO. "To honor their service and sacrifice, we're inviting people across the nation to help us 'push up' support for Wounded Warrior Project® - an amazing organization that helps critically injured service men and women return to productive civilian lives."

Here's how it works: Now through May 29, when you do 10 pushups and log them on http://www.dropandgivethem10.com/, CSX will donate $1 to Wounded Warrior Project®.  If you post a picture or your experience, CSX will donate an additional $1 up to $50,000 total. Just don't forget to use the #GiveThem10 hashtag when sharing tweets or Instagram images.

CSX has a long-standing commitment to hiring America's veterans and reservists. Nearly one in five CSX employees has served in the military, and many continue to hold Reserve or National Guard status. In April 2013, CSX was ranked first on the list of Top 10 Companies for Veterans by DiversityInc.

About Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP)
Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) began when several veterans and friends, moved by stories of the first wounded service members returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq, took action to help others in need. What started as a desire to provide comfort items to wounded service members at Walter Reed Army Medical Center has grown into a holistic rehabilitative effort to assist warriors with visible and invisible wounds as they recover and transition back to civilian life. Tens of thousands of injured servicemen and women, family members, and caregivers receive support each year through WWP programs. Learn more by visiting woundedwarriorproject.org.

CSX Team Honored for Rebuilding Ecosystem at Gautier Wood Treatment Facility

Received the following via email.

CSX Team Honored for Rebuilding Ecosystem at Gautier Wood Treatment Facility

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - May 21, 2013 - In recognition of a successful two-year environmental remediation project that restored the ecosystem of a 24-acre former wood treatment site in Gautier, Miss., CSX Corporation (NYSE: CSX) and its partners were awarded the annual Phoenix Award for sustainable brownfield redevelopment by the Phoenix Awards Institute.

"The Gautier remediation project embodies our company's deep commitment to environmental stewardship, wildlife management and economic development on our existing and inherited properties," said Skip Elliott, vice president - public safety, health and environment, CSX. "An area that was once abandoned is now a healthy ecosystem and a vibrant community asset that will be enjoyed for years to come."

The Phoenix Awards recognize outstanding revitalization projects in the U.S. that have restored abandoned properties into dynamic mixed-use communities. Presented at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Brownfields Conference in Atlanta, award winners shared best practices and techniques for remediation planning to encourage replication across the country.

"We applaud the CSX team for its remarkable dedication to environmental awareness, protection and conservation," said Denise K. Chamberlain, executive chair of the Phoenix Awards Institute. "By adopting a stakeholder-inclusive approach to remediation, CSX successfully engaged regulatory, municipal, and community leaders throughout the process, modeling the type of collaboration and thought that should characterize every remediation project."

Located within a coastal community in the Pascagoula River Watershed, the Gautier site had been a brownfield for nearly two decades following the closure of a wood treatment facility that was operated by a predecessor railroad for more than 100 years.  Wood treated at the site was used for a variety of purposes, including building of the Panama Canal.

Through a combination of unique design and the use of specialized geosynthetic materials, the CSX-led team contained and stabilized the residual wood treating compounds in the ground and sediment, improving the overall health of the watershed and helping to protect the estuary and adjacent uplands from the erosive forces of tropical storms and hurricanes. The site now offers a natural aesthetic surrounding the established neighborhoods, encouraging recreational use of the Pascagoula River and promoting ecotourism in the region.

Working alongside CSX to complete the remediation were the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality; Land Trust of the Mississippi Coastal Plain; ARCADIS U.S.; Butler, Snow, O'Mara, Stevens, & Cannada, PLLC; and McGuire Woods, LLP.

CSX Employee Named Top Environmentalist by Association of American Railroads

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - May 16, 2013 - The Association of American Railroads (AAR) last night named CSX Corporation (NYSE: CSX) employee Rick McNey the winner of its annual John H. Chafee Environmental Excellence Award for outstanding environmental awareness and responsibility.

"Rick and his team have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to environmental awareness, protection and conservation - setting an example for CSX and the entire freight rail industry," said Skip Elliott, vice president - public safety, health and environment, CSX. "Getting the right results the right way is a core value at CSX and this prestigious award recognizes Rick's tireless work to serve our customers while preserving environmental resources."

McNey is manager of maintenance at the 150-acre Curtis Bay Pier in Baltimore, Md. McNey oversees all mobile and stationary equipment at the facility, which operates 24 hours a day, receiving, processing, and loading a variety of bulk products. Under his leadership, CSX reduced emissions and energy consumption at the pier and implemented strict environmental stewardship practices to further safeguard the sensitive watershed adjacent to the facility.

McNey and the local team of more than 100 people are also responsible for developing numerous mechanical enhancements that improved environmental efficiency at the facility. Successful projects led by McNey include installing a state-of-the-art geothermal cooling system which reduced energy use by 40 percent; reducing water consumption by 40 percent by harvesting rain water and snow melt; using energy efficient light emitting diode (LED) bulbs; improving the efficiency of the facility's electrical network; and upgrading the pier's dust mitigation system.

"Rick's work to improve efficiency while protecting the environment is a credit to the entire railroad industry," said Edward R. Hamberger, president and CEO, AAR. "We salute the dedication that he and his team consistently display to maintaining sustainable operations that improve the quality of life for the communities we serve."

The annual Chafee Environmental Excellence Award is named for the late Rhode Island senator who devoted his career to protecting the environment. McNey is the sixth CSX employee to win this recognition.

Saturday's LEHL sightings

(Train sightings on 5-4-13.)

With a warm sun shining, the yard chores and plantings could wait until I got back from going track side on Saturday morning along the LEHL. The first stop would be Bloomsbury where I managed to photograph NS 22V heading east around 8:54 in almost perfect sunlight. Motive power was NS 7647 and NS 7589 laboring with a long train of COFCs as it climbed NJ's "mountain barrier" known as the Musconetcong Mountain. It took almost five minutes for this train to pass my vantage point. Next eastbound train was NS 212 that would take the siding at the west side of Pattenburg Tunnel around 10 AM. It would hold for two westbound trains, 21M and 11J. By that time I decided to take a break and head home to start those yard chores.

Knowing that there was also a eastbound Air Products high and wide load scheduled to come east, around one o'clock I decided to take a well-needed break from planting vincas, straighten out my back and head back to the LEHL to catch the H/W train designated as NS 052. Around 2:30, it would pass over the Raritan River in Neshanic Station. Motive power was two C40-9Ws, NS 9406 and NS 9636. This heat exchanger was shipped from the Air Products Hanover Township (PA) facility on Friday via CP, Reading & Northern and NS. NS 052 would overnight in Manville Yard before heading down CSX's Trenton Line for shipment overseas on Sunday morning, supposedly to Saudi Arabia.

“Our railroad is on track to continue to do great things as we continue emphasizing operating efficiency and productivity,” Moorman said. “I’m excited and optimistic about our company’s future.”

Moorman noted that even with a downturn in coal traffic in 2012, Norfolk Southern still recorded its second-best year for revenue, operating income, net income, and earnings per share – topped only by 2011.

Moorman said the company’s public-private partnership investments in strategic rail corridors position intermodal business as a major competitive strength. New intermodal facilities opened over the past two years “help us build business, while creating jobs in communities and strengthening local economies.”

He praised the skill of employees and their efforts to sustain Norfolk Southern’s industry leadership in safety, service, and environmental responsibility.

Moorman thanked three retiring directors for their longstanding distinguished service to the corporation: Jerry Baliles, director of the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia and former governor of Virginia; Pete Correll, chairman of Atlanta Equity Investors and former chairman of Georgia Pacific Corporation; and Adm. Paul Reason, former president and chief operations officer of Metro Machine Corporation and retired four-star admiral assigned as commander in chief U.S. Atlantic Fleet.

In official business, stockholders re-elected 12 directors for terms expiring in 2014: Thomas D. Bell Jr., chairman of Mesa Capital Partners; Erskine B. Bowles, senior advisor to BDT Capital Partners LLC and Carousel Capital; Robert A. Bradway, chairman and chief executive officer of Amgen Inc.; Wesley G. Bush, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Northrop Grumman Corporation; Daniel A. Carp, chairman of Delta Air Lines Inc.; Karen N. Horn, a partner with Brock Capital Group; Burton M. Joyce, former chairman of IPSCO; Steven F. Leer, executive chairman of Arch Coal Inc.; Michael D. Lockhart, retired chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Armstrong World Industries Inc.; Moorman; Martin H. Nesbitt, co-founder of The Vistria Group; and John R. Thompson, government relations consultant for Best Buy Co. Inc.

Stockholders ratified appointment of KPMG LLP as auditors, approved an advisory resolution on the compensation of executive officers, and approved an amendment to the company’s bylaws to give stockholders the right to call a special meeting.

Moorman’s remarks to stockholders and a new video are posted in the Investors section of the NS website.

Norfolk Southern’s Roanoke office building earns ENERGY STAR certification

ROANOKE, VA. – Norfolk Southern’s office building at 110 Franklin Road SE in Roanoke has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR certification, which signifies that the building performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA.

"Norfolk Southern is pleased to accept EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification in recognition of our energy efficiency efforts,” said Andy Paul, manager energy services. "This demonstrates our commitment to environmental stewardship while also lowering our energy costs. ENERGY STAR is a great tool to compare our building performance with our peers. This inspired us to do what we can to achieve the triple bottom line -- planet, people, and profit. We are proud of this accomplishment and excited about similar work across our network.”

Commercial buildings that earn EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Norfolk Southern improved its energy performance by managing energy strategically across its entire 22-state system and by making cost-effective improvements to its building.

“Improving the energy efficiency of our nation’s buildings is critical to protecting our environment,” said Jean Lupinacci, Chief of the ENERGY STAR Commercial & Industrial Branch. “From the boiler room to the board room, Norfolk Southern is leading the way by making their buildings more efficient and earning EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification.”

To earn ENERGY STAR, Norfolk Southern:
• Used real-time metering to monitor electricity usage. Monitoring at 15-minute intervals allowed the company to chase after the last watt of wasted electricity.
• Reanalyzed the building automation system to verify set points and startup/shutdown times so the building wasn’t running when no one needed it.
• Installed a new independent HVAC system for off-hour building use.
• Upgraded exterior lights to LEDs.
• Replaced stairwell lights with on-demand LEDs.

With these energy reduction techniques Norfolk Southern is able to save more than $60,000 a year at the Franklin Building alone.

EPA’s ENERGY STAR energy performance scale helps Norfolk Southern assess how efficiently its buildings use energy relative to similar buildings nationwide. A building that scores a 75 or higher on EPA’s 1-100 scale might be eligible for ENERGY STAR certification. Energy Star is a pre-requisite for a building to become LEED certified under the United States Green Building Councils (USGBC) existing building program.

ENERGY STAR was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 65 different kinds of products, 1.4 million new homes, and 20,000 commercial buildings and industrial plants that meet strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the EPA. Over the past twenty years, American families and businesses have saved more than $230 billion on utility bills and prevented more than 1.8 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions with help from ENERGY STAR.

Cooper-Bessemer Engineer Dies at 105

Received the following via email.

Now here's a guy who could have told some C-B stories! And, he worked at both the Grove City and Mount Vernon sites during The Glory Days. I wonder what he knew about the GE locomotive engine's development ? We'll now never know. What would you have given to have sat with him for a few hours with a digital recorder and a list of questions? I'll bet it would have made Mr. Patrick smile to know that one of the pair of 8-cylinder engines developed six decades ago for the 1954 GE/ERIE RR test set will soon be safe in a new museum home in North East, PA.

See our post on Friday, March 08, 2013 about the above mentioned 8-cylinder engines used in a set of test locomotives.

Norfolk Southern to rock National Train Day
Railroad rolls out trains, family fun, and a new twist on an old classic

NORFOLK, VA. – Norfolk Southern will rock National Train Day with the premiere of its new television advertisement, which shows how trains connect communities and businesses to drive economic growth.

The commercial, “Norfolk Southern, What’s Your Function,” will show during National Train Day, the sixth annual celebration of freight and passenger trains hosted by Amtrak, on Saturday, May 11, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Union Station in Washington, D.C.

NS activities will center on the theme “Train Day Rocks” and the first showing of the commercial, based on the “Conjunction Junction” song from the Schoolhouse Rock! television show, a Disney / American Broadcasting company property that celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. A locomotive engineer sang the original song as he hooked together boxcars with “and, or, and but.” The NS ad updates this classic to remind everyone that trains connect us all.

In conjunction with the debut, there will be a Schoolhouse Rock! sing-along. NS will display rail equipment, including its Marco Polo, West Virginia, and Delaware office cars; Exhibit Car; Research and Test Car; and two locomotives. (Click here to view a slideshow of the equipment.)

Across the country, more than 200 communities are hosting events at local train stations, railroad museums, and other locations. At Chicago’s Union Station, Norfolk Southern will display its Conrail heritage locomotive.
