Fwd: Finally got it!

Received via email

I managed to get that PC heritage unit leading westbound 21M! It had come into NJ with this same power consist on 20W but under the cover of darkness. I decided to go trackside and see what was running as I had a suspicion that the PC unit might go out on 21M and it did. 21M is seen headed west through the Valley Road grade crossing (LEHL MP 40) in Hillsborough (NJ) at 9:06 AM on Tuesday morning. NS's PC heritage was the leader with BNSF 3971 and BNSF 7353 as the trailing units. Not a bad photo for this dreary morning, eh? As a footnote to my good fortune, I also purchased not one but two Pick-6 lottery tickets for Thursday night's drawing.

Fwd: Sometimes I think too much for my own good!

Received via email

Take the case of Tuesday's 212 coming through central NJ. A friend texted me that
CN 2923 was leading NS 9822 and NS 9112 through Emmaus at 9 AM. Knowing that gave me lots of time to think about where to photograph it with ample sunshine. I debated in my mind to go to CP SULLY (Nah!), Manville (Nah!), the Neshanic Station Bridge over the Raritan River (Nope as Branchburg PD said it wasn't a good idea for me to be standing on that bridge!) or Bloomsbury (That might be cutting it too close!) and so I settled on an old tired and true spot, namely Stanton Station. That S-Curve is a nice spot plus the sun should be good. Boy was I wrong about the sun as it was mostly on the opposite side from where I was standing leaving only the CN's nose illuminated by the sun. If I had gone with my first two choices what a nice photo that would have been. As I originally said sometimes I think too much for my own good!

Fwd: A colorful morning at Stanton Station!

Received via email

With the Internet mentioning that Saturday's 212 through central NJ would have three BNSF diesels as its power consist that was enough motivation to get me trackside this morning. Heading off to Stanton Station on NS's Lehigh Line, it was just a matter now of me waiting for it to make its passage past here. Around 10:30, the sound of an eastbound blowing for the Kiceniuk Road grade crossing had me wondering if this was 212? As the NS leader came into sight my assumption proved to be wrong. NS 7525 and NS 9766 would be bringing 22V east with its consist of colorful COFCs. Local railfans have dubbed this particular train the "Crayola Train" because of the variety of colored COFCs. Another ten minutes would pass before another horn was heard blowing for that crossing. As this train's leader came into sight this was what I had been waiting for! With BNSF 5022 (C44-9W), BNSF 6704 (ES44C4) and BNSF 4713 (C44-9W), still in its warbonnet paint scheme, as its motive power consist, 212 would head east through the Stanton Station grade crossing at around 10:46 AM. Watching 212 pass by it was interesting to see the three BNSF varied paint schemes.

Fwd: NJT's 5175 pulling into Whitehouse Station

Received via email

After dealing with Wednesday's Nor'easter then shoveling out here in central NJ, heading trackside on Friday was just what I needed. To take advantage of a sunny day I decided to head up to NJT's Whitehouse Station on the Raritan Valley Line on Friday afternoon. NJT's website stated RVL service was operating on a normal schedule which would enable me to photograph westbound train 5175 pulling into the station. 2:12 PM's scheduled arrival time came and no 5175 was to be seen or heard approaching the station. An announcement over the PA system stated 5175 was "...running twelve minutes late." Finally about 2:31 NJT's 5175 made it to Whitehouse station. Seen in the background is the former CNJ station which has been converted to house a library. Inside are some nice railroading photos of the way this location used to be.
