Railroading in Northwest NJ

People familiar with northwest New Jersey are familiar with the miles and miles of rail track that traverse the state. There are many romanticized stories of the railroads, but they are truly the backbone of our country, and helped join east with west. Join us on Thursday, April 7, 2011 as Bob Pennisi, noted railroad author/publisher, takes us for a virtual ride on the rails of Northwestern New Jersey.

The slideshow presentation will cover railroading in Morris, Warren, Sussex and Hunterdon counties. It will focus on the Lackawanna, Erie Lackawanna, Lehigh & Hudson River, Morristown & Erie, Susquehanna, Jersey Central, Conrail & NJ Transit railways. Bob Pennisi, the evening's speaker, was an agent-operator for the Erie Lackawanna from 1962 until 1977 when he left to pursue publishing rail books. He was been an avid rail fan for his entire life and a photographer for over 50 years.. The Hackettstown Historical Society meets in Seay Hall on the campus of historic Centenary College. The meeting begins at 7:30 and is free to Society members. All are welcome; a donation is appreciated from the public. For more information on the Historical Society and its events, please call the museum at 908.852.8797 or visit the Society's website.  http://hackettstownhistory.com/

Beware of phishing emails

Something a little off the topic, but very important.

Last week a large email marketing services company was hacked, exposing millions of peoples email addresses. There is a good chance that one of the companies that has your email address is a client of this marketing services company. These exposed email addresses could be used to launch a phishing attack. Beware of legitimate looking emails. Read the article linked below for more information.

Millions of emails exposed in major security breach

For those who do not know what Phishing is, here is a definition from the Computing Dictionary.

phishing definition

security
("brand spoofing", "carding", after "fishing") /fishing/ Sending e-mail that claims to be from some well-known organisation, e.g. a bank, to trick the recipient into revealing information for use in identity theft. The user is told to visit a web site where they are asked to enter information such as passwords, credit card details, social security or bank account numbers. The web site usually looks like it belongs to the organisation in question and may silently redirect the user to the real web site after collecting their data.

For example, a scam started in 2003 claimed that the user's eBay account would be suspended unless he updated his credit card information on a given web site.

Ringling Brothers circus will be arriving in May!

(Modeling idea from one of our customers.)

... as that is what the billboard is advertising. The painters are putting on the finishing touches as the morning sun is starting to shine on them. I got this idea while attending a ice hockey game in Trenton. There were some advertisements regarding the circus's arrival laying around. I thought that using some creativity and a scanner might result in a billboard. This ad was made by cutting and taping those original ads to be a little bigger than the billboard kit poster's space. I scanned it in along with adding text and dates. Had to experiment with the font and colors to see what combination looked best. Once that was done, I used a photo editing program to print off this "photo" of the ad then carefully trimmed so it would fit in on the billboard. Elmer's White glue was used and matte photo paper from Staples was used when printing it off. I thought that creating this allows my layout to be a little more personalized by creating a one-of-a-kind billboard.

Close Clearances Revisited

Received the following photos and captions via email.  Photographer unknown.

A lesson on close clearances

Vehicles are shipped by rail in what is known as auto racks.
Auto racks are over 20 feet tall and are fully enclosed to protect the vehicles from damage. (12/31/2010)

Not all railroad tracks can accommodate 20 foot high freight cars.
Note the sheared roof and bent ends on this auto rack because of a recent mishap in Locust Point, Baltimore, MD. (3/20/11)

The destination of these auto racks was Curtis Bay, MD, which likely meant that these vehicles were destined for export. After the mishap, the damaged auto racks and vehicles were moved to the domestic vehicle distribution center at Jessup, MD for unloading and evaluation. (3/20/2011)

Route 206 bridge over the Trenton Line progress rpt...

(Train sightings on 3-27-11.)

CSX's Q417 passes in front of Route 206's northern bridge abutment (MP 50 on the TL) with its mixed consist of freight on March 27, 2011 in Belle Mead, NJ.  Motive power was CSX 8764 (SD60M) and CSX 8844 (ex-CR 6480; SD40-2).  The southern bridge abutment has been completed and grading the area around it has been done.  With the severe winter New Jersey has experienced, I would speculate that construction project is behind schedule.  Originally, it was said the new bridge's steel spans for the Route 206 roadway would be in place by February.  As one can see, that has not happened.  The old span, seen in the background, is best described by saying its days are definitely numbered.

I should have heeded my wife's advice!

(Train sightings on 3-21-11.)

Why do I question Deb’s wisdom?  Monday illustrates a good example of why I say that.  Ringling Brothers Red Unit Circus train was scheduled to depart Newark in the afternoon for its 534 mile trip to Youngstown, Ohio.  The location I selected to photograh the circus train would be the Valley Road grade crossing (MP 40 on the LEHL) in Hillsborough.  At 3:15, my wait would start under overcast skies and an intermittent drizzle, definitely not the best conditions.  These weather conditions were definitely better when compared to the Red Unit’s trip from Philadelphia into Newark back on February 21st.  Snow was my constant companion on that day!

My wait would be interrupted by NS 6140's approaching headlight on NS H74.  This local freight would be working the Aeropres facility here at MP 40.  While shifting some tank cars, the dispatcher questioned as to how long they would be since the circus train was about an hour away.  This was around 3:55.  Their response was they would be done shortly and then be heading west.  At 4:45, H74 finished up their switching and proceeded to head west with eleven cars in a push-pull mode.  Ahhh… it wouldn’t be long now before the circus train was here I thought.

Around 5:08, a westbound approaching headlight could be seen through the ground fog.  Perhaps this finally would be what I was waiting for, the circus train.  There was no chatter on my scanner to indicate this train’s symbol so I surmised it had to be the circus train.  My hopes were shot down when I saw this was NS 9190 as the leader for this mixed freight.  NS 33K’s sixty-four cars added up to a 4,100 foot-long train.

As the daylight started to fade and the drizzle picking up in intensity, I decided to call it a day at around 5:35. Calling my wife, I let her know that I was on my way home.  She inquired if I saw the circus train and my reply was no.  I then went on to say the rain was getting more intense, the existing light was fading, there was no chatter on the scanner and yadda, yadda, yadda,…  She said give it fifteen more minutes.  I responded by saying it wasn’t worth the wait since there was no indication it was anywhere near my location and conditions were not getting any better.  With that she said “I’ll see you when you get home.”

After dinner, I decided to see why the circus train was delayed via the internet postings.  I was surprised that if I had taken my wife’s advice to “…give it fifteen more minutes.” , I would have seen the circus train!  It was passing through Port Reading Jct at 5:47.  That location was a little over two miles east from where I was.  Once again the “15 minute rule” was in effect on this day.  This rule states that fifteen minutes after you leave a spot, the train you have been waiting for will appear!  I suppose that next time I should also take my wife’s advice and stay.

Norfolk Southern receives Graniteville ruling

NORFOLK, VA. -- On March 18, 2011, Norfolk Southern received an unfavorable ruling from an arbitration panel regarding an insurance claim arising out of the Jan. 6, 2005, derailment in Graniteville, S.C.

As a result, during the first quarter of 2011 Norfolk Southern will record an expense for the receivables for the contested portion of the claim ($43 million) as well as an expense for other receivables that may be affected by the decision (approximately $15 million), as it is not probable that these amounts will be recovered.

It is anticipated that NS will be responsible for certain legal costs of the insurance carrier associated with the arbitration proceeding, although the amount of such costs is not presently known.

LNE 611 still alive

Received the following via email from Kermit Geary Jr.  Text, photos, and captions are his.

After hearing many varying reports as to the demise of the LNE 611, I wanted to see for myself, especially after "discovering" this unit in 1984 working away in obscurity.
While it has been replaced by a ex-BNSF(ATSF) GP-9, the 611 still resides intact in Emporia, IN. It had been sold to a scrapper in New Castle, IN, but received a last minute reprieve when it was purchased from the scrap company by an unknown individual. She is currently stored in Emporia awaiting her new owners to transport her to her new home...where ever that may be!!
